Statue of Nagamasa Azai
A portrait of Azai Nagamasa, third head of the Azai clan, who were sengoku warlords who ruled the Kohoku area (now Nagahama City and Maibara City) for three generations. Nagamasa famously fought with Oda Nobunaga. The attire Nagamasa is wearing in this portrait represents the “Mitsumori Kikkou Mon” (three tortoise shell crest) of the Azai clan. The work was created in the Edo period based on a portrait of Nagamasa (owned by the Odani Castle Ruins Preservation Society) painted on the first anniversary of his death.
