Stone axe (excavated from the Irienai Lake Ruins)
A ground stone axe collected at the Irienai Lake Ruins (in Maibara City). The Irienai Lake Ruins are compound ruins dating from the Jomon period onward. Much pottery and many stone axes have been excavated from the site. Stone axes were used to cut down trees and provide material to make wooden items. Stone axes made by grinding have a sharper edge than flaked stone axes and made it possible to cut down more trees in a shorter amount of time.
