Shibi (roof tile) (excavated from Isohaiji Temple)
Shibi are ornaments which adorn both ends of the main roof ridge on ancient palaces and temples. This artifact is made of the same material as roof tiles and was collected from the Isohaiji Temple (in Iso, Maibara City) and is comprised of a stepped band, interim bands, and body. It is an overall greyish white, indicating good firing. Based on the Baekje-style pattern of the two interim bands, it is dated to around the latter half of the seventh century. The Isohaiji Temple is one of Shiga Prefecture’s most exemplary ancient temples and is believed to have been built with the help of settlers from the Korean kingdom of Baekje.
