Battle of Shizugatake drawn on byobu (folding screen)
A folding screen depicting the Battle of Shizugatake, in which the armies of Hashiba Hideyoshi and Shibata Katsuie fought near Lake Yogo in 1583. The right half focuses on the activities of the “Seven Spears of Shizugatake,” when Hideyoshi’s army assaulted the army of Shibata Katsumasa, who retreated from Oiwayama Lookout on April 21. Hideyoshi is also depicted giving directions with a folding fan in hand from troop headquarters. The composition of the left half focuses on the battle for Oiwayama Lookout, which took place the previous day on April 20. No other such folding screen’s depictions of the battle show Shibata Katsuie’s headquarters at Genbao Castle, making this a precious example.
